Hand-woven Binga wall basket from Zimbabwe - 60 cm.
Description
The flat wall baskets come from the Binga region and are traditionally made by BaTonga/Tonga women. They are traditionally crafted from local plant fibers, including Ilala palm, and the dark fibers are dyed with natural dyes from sources such as bark. Originally, these large, flat baskets were used to clean/sift grain – hence winnowing baskets – while today they are also sold as decorative wall baskets.
Each basket is hand-woven, and the pattern is therefore individual.
